Activities to Support Cadets
- Incoming cadet candidates and their families are welcomed during a Banquet jointly organized by the Twin Cities Area Chapter of the United States Air Force Academy Association of Graduates and the USAFA Parent Club of Minnesota.
- An Orientation meeting helps candidates prepare for Basic Cadet Training and life at USAFA. If possible, current cadets participate in the orientation to answer questions.
- During the school year, the Cookie Packing event sends a huge box of homemade goodies and treats to every Minnesota cadet and preppie before winter finals.
- Additionally, cadets receive birthday cards signed by club parents.
- Just as the cadets undergo a college experience that is unlike that of their high school friends, cadet parents can face a challenging transition to a military life that may be unknown to their friends and family members. Many liken it to entering a foreign country with a different language and acronyms, customs, costume and rites of passage to learn. Unless you are already from a military family, this new military life can be daunting.
- To help ease the transition, freshmen a.k.a. "Doolie" parents are assigned an upperclassmen mentor family to help answer questions about Basic Cadet Training, Recognition and more. Mentor families check in regularly with their mentees to see how things are going.
- Monthly business meetings are held during the academic year to plan events, share stories of cadets’ successes and challenges, receive updates from the Admission Liaison Officer (ALO) to the club, and more. USAFA alumni regularly make presentations about their career paths in the Air Force. Parents are encouraged to take on leadership roles and share their personal and professional skills to strengthen the club.
- More informal events include a summer picnic and Parent Night Out social gatherings when club members meet informally at restaurants across the metro area or other venues. Parents build relationships and make connections to build a sense of community.
